What is a smoke detector? Why do I have to have one in my house?
A smoke detector is an electronic device that automatically detects and gives warning to the presence of smoke, typically as an indicator to fire.
Legislation on this matter is very straight forward. If you own a residential property that is subject to sale, rent of hire then under the Building Regulations 2012, you are required to have a compliant mains-powered smoke detector/alarm installed.
If your house was built before 1997 then there would not have been one installed. The onus is on you to have a compliant mains-powered smoke detector/alarm installed. If your house was built after that year then you should already have a compliant mains-powered smoke detector/alarm installed.
Smoke detector/alarms should be tested at least every 6 months and batteries should be replaced annually.
